This e-book includes the papers provided on the "First foreign Sympo st sium on Aerogels (1 ISA)", held in September 1985 at. the college of Wiirzburg, Fed. Rep. of Germany. It used to be the 1st meet.ing of this sort, wit.h individuals from a number of ecu count.ries, the USA of the US, Canada, South the US, and Africa. The assembly used to be interdisciplinary, with many of the contributors being physicists, chemists or fabric scientists ei ther from universities or from business learn institutes. enable me try and shed a few gentle upon the category of gear the symposium used to be approximately: Aerogels are tremendous porous high-tech fabrics, consisting ei ther of silica, alumina, zirconia, stannic or tungsten oxide or combinations of those oxides. as a result of their excessive porosity (up t.o 99%!) and t.heir huge internal floor, aerogels function specially lively catalysts or as catalytic subst.rates, as adsorbents, fillers, reinforcement brokers, pigments and gellifying brokers. Silica aerogels as translucent or obvious superinsulating fillers in window platforms may possibly aid to significantly decrease thermal losses in home windows and to enhance the power stability in passive sun platforms. Aerogels even have fas cinating acoustic houses - the sound pace may be as little as a hundred m/s! The construction of aerogels begins with the managed conversion of a sol right into a gel: the expansion of clusters or polymer chains from a chemical resolution, the cross-linking of those basic entities and the formation of a coherent community - nonetheless embedded in a liquid.

We also found that higher concentration of catalyst gave better transparency. The fumes from tetramethoxysilane are dangerous and can cause blindness. Thus we tested other esters of orthosilicic acid available to find a replacement. Only tetraethoxysilane gave good transparency but the number of cracks in the pieces wa& much higher than for tetramethoxysilane. The alcogel was placed in methanol baths with increasing concentration for some days to improve the transparency. In the baths the remaining water was washed out of the alcogel.
In the baths the remaining water was washed out of the alcogel. 050 at a wavelength of 340 nm. For lower refractive indices this effect is less pronounced. 6 • • :e 5 VI ::J ... g ..... 4 4 38 8 12 Time/days 16 20 Fig. B o ... \- .... ::I \ CI) CI) ::I 20015 .... \ III III CI) ~ \ CI) a. 30 () Fig. 5 bar). We found that maximum temperature of 270 0 C and a maximum pressure of 90 bar was sufficient to get aerogel of good quality. In figure 2 the autoclave cycle is shown. About 700 liters of aerogel were needed for the Cern experiment so a bigger pressure vessel had to be bought.
